I was burning a dvd img with dvd decrypter. The program locked and wouldn't shut down, so I rebooted, while the dvd rom drive was still going. Now it doesn't reboot to windows and first says

scanning ide drives...
no fastrack controller, bios not installed.

Then I get a message

Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and push a key.

I reboot and hit f8 and then I only get the options to select a boot device which are

PM - ST3120022A
SM - NEC DVD RW
VIA VT6420 1st HDD
VIA VT6420 2nd HDD

I've tried every one of these and still can't boot into Windows. I get the same 'choose boot device'. I've then tried putting in my windows install disc and choosing 'NEC' as boot, and then it want to install windows. I get the option to use 'recovery console' but I've never used that.

What is the best way to get Windows to boot up? Do I need to use 'recovery console'? If I do, will that completely erase my hard drive where windows was installed?

Sounds like you have a little bit of a problem,, First make sure that there are no disks in the drives, ( expecially the little 3.5).

If no,
Unplug the pc, remove side look for the battery, and pull it out. press the power button. Wait two mins. reinsert the battery, plug back in and boot.

If still no.
When the pc is booting, ppress the F1 or ESC or the Delete key, to access the bios. (just after the lights on the keyboard flash the first time.)

Look in the settings or something simmilar for boot device, make sure its not set to CD rom, Set the HD to boot first. then the CD rom, (If you truely messed up the CD drive, you may want to leave it off so it dont boot.).

Last but not least get your windows CD and put it in the CD drive, (make sure the bios thing is set to boot from CD), and boot the pc. skip the first repair screen and continue, and then on the second repair screen select the repair option, (The first one is if you know dos and how to repair files manually, the second will automaticly do it, (this will save your information that you have on the HD.)

Lastly, REFORMAT... This will erase all your data and start your pc back at new... You will need to get these after you get to the desktop,
Windows SP2. Video and sound drivers, IE7, ALL microsoft updates, Flash player, shockwave, Java, Adobe reader, Your music player. and anyother miss programs that you have installed, (messanger, network connections, DVIX, Also if you have a problem with online sound not playing, check out this link..

Yes use recovery console, no it should not overwrite any information unless you format the hard drive. If you see the words "this will erase your hard drive" or anything similar, you're in the wrong place.

By any chance, did you try shutting down and UNPLUGGING your computer (let it sit for a few minutes)? That really clears any memory that may be related to the DVD working while you rebooted (DOH!) .... I'd try that before you go any further.....
