When you use a FlatIron what happens is that it's really hot on your hair and you're applying all that heat to "naked" hair. The way it was put to me at a conference I went to was that think of your hair as a shirt, and think of your Flat Iron as a clothing Iron. What do you usually do to take out the wrinkles and keep the heat from damaging your clothes? Use a spray of some sort. So when you flat iron your hair (this is what I do to my hair and all my clients hair, i'm a hairdresser), Use a flat iron spray or a heat protectant spray (i suggest Matrix SleekLook Iron protectant) It'll really help with the damage and also make sure your get your hair cut ever 6-8 weeks too. That'll help with those split ends. I know it seems strange to go get it done all the time, but when you do things like straighten your hair, probably go every 5-7 weeks. It'll help your hair look healthy and keep you from worrying about your split ends.

Usually you can straighten your hair as much as you want without anything happening. Could it be that your straightener is on at too high of a temperature? If so, it could fry your hair. I know that there are ways to straighten your hair without electronics, but I'm not sure how to explain it. I know that you can put in Aussie's leave in conditioner and de-frizzer BEFORE you straighten your hair to avoid heat damage and split ends. As long as you take care of your hair, there is nothing wrong with using a straightener. OH!!! I remember now! It's called a perm, but perms can damage your hair as well. Hope this helps.

Wait till your hair is 3 quarters dry.
Spray your hair with straightening hairspray from top to bottom.
With your blowdryer (nozzle on it) in one hand, and a round boar bristle brush in the other, "clamp" your hair between the two (making sure the blowdrying is facing downwards) blowdry downwards tightly.
The brush acts as a straightener plus it combs out your hair too!
If you have naturally wavy/curly hair, then pay more attention at the ends. This is where most of the natural 'bounce' is.
Then set with more straightening hairspray, and you're done!

blow dry your hair and brush it straight at the same time. it still makes it straight without looking fried :)
