To me, this quote means, that by helping other and doing good, you will generally feel much better. That pretty much ties into selfless service. Although I would also use the quote in a mass propeganda for the gov't.
Example: Uncle Sam wants you!

well, the quote is all about selfless service, the idea that true happiness comes from giving not getting; serving, not being served ,etc.

Many therapists/counsellors, etc recommend the same thing: as we focus on helping others instead of focusing on our own problems, then we really find happiness.

Jesus said greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. And in losing our life (for the sake of others) we find true happiness and, as we obey God, eternal life.

To find out who you really are, you need to stop thinking about yourself and help others. If you put others' need in front of yours then you are not selfish. If you can't do that and only whine and say poor you when you help others, you are selfish.

i believe that it means to help others as much as possible without being selfish ,in time you will learn what kind of person you really are, what your values are and what kind of person you will be.
