Tinting is the term used by professional hairdressers for dyeing the hair. Tinting involves using an amonia based color mixed with a peroxide based developer. It works by opening the cuticle of the hair, removing some of the old or natural color, and then redepositing new color into the hair shaft.
Yes, it is damaging to the hair, because in the lifting process, some of the cuticle scales fall off, some stay lifted, and this exposes the inner cortex of the hair shaft to further damage. Most times, right after tinting, the hair feels and seems in better condition because any damaged areas are filled in with the color and conditioning molecules, but the effect is only temporary, the damage is still there, when those molecules wash out again, the hair shaft is rough and damaged underneath.
There are also semi-permanent haircolors, which are sometimes called 6 week rinses, that don't do as much damage because they aren't mixed with peroxide, and work by "wrapping" the shaft in color, and staining it a bit. It doesn't penetrate deep into the hair cortex like tint. there are also temporary rinses that wash out after one shampoo.

Basically what the hair stylist do is to apply some form of chemicals on your hair. As with all chemicals, it can damaged your hair. After tinting, you'll need hair conditioner atleast twice a week when you shampoo your hair.

Well isn't that dyeing your hair in some form? I would imagine it does damage it, not as much as bleaching but adding any dyes to hair isn't good for it.
