so then just switch over to pulse while in India!!

Might be that, in India, your local phone network still supports three-wire service. That could be a problem if you plug in a phone that was built to work on the US PSTN, which is a two-wire network.

These days US PSTN access is through tone dialling, to speed up the dialling process, to support apps like voicemail and bank account access, and to play "Happy Birthday" on the keypad. Pulse is still supported as a backup, but you won't find many pulse-only phones except at garage sales and in basements like my parents'.

All US phones have the option of "Tone" or "Pulse"~
