Start when he shows signs of readiness, or you'll be potty trained, not him.
-Understanding how to use a potty(what to do in it)
-Understanding when he's wet or soiled
-Has communication skills to alert you when he needs to go
-Pulling pants up and down(not very neccessary, but helps you)
-Tells you when he needs to be changed

Hope that helped. I know that some people start soon after birth(but here is where mama/daddy is potty trained, not the child), but I suggest to proceed when you're child is ready. I have 26 month-old who I am trying to potty train now.
Best of luck to you!

you can always start antd encourage him and see how it goes, if he fights you or really shows no interest then you stop for a while, my daughter was potty trained before she was 1 1/2 my boy seems like he will be a little longer
