In Wing Chun Kung Fu we have the "Luk Dim Boon Kwan", or Six and a Half Point Staff.

There are six and a half main movements, but coupled together in diferent combination will give the MA an effective long range fighting weapon.

The "Luk Dim Boon Kwan", or Six and a Half Point Staff is said to be prefered over a sword to will in a battle, and was one of the only weapons Chinese peasents were allowed to carry on there person during the Ching Dynasty.

In most cases the martial art from which the weapon set was developed has a hand form wherein the weapon becomes an extension of the hand.

The hand set is taught first so that te student has knowledge of how to effectively exicute the basic technique.

Most martial arts have technique that can in essence be utilized with pole, or bo fighting.

There are multiple martial arts that use a staff, throughout Asia, Africa, Europe, though the Asian styles are the most common throughout the States and Europe.

Some have the tool in their generalized compendium of techniques, other styles like Kali for example....use it as a forefront weapon.

Japanese ryu-ha :

Bujinkan Ninpo Taijutsu (all 9 schools contained within the system use a staff, of varying lengths and derivitive functions, and in differing ways), Yagyu Shinkage Ryu, Muso Shinden Ryu, Araki Ryu, etc etc.

Chinese gung-fu :

Every style of the Chinese arts I've ever seen uses a staff or some staff-like tool.

the list goes on and on....
