I'm right in the middle of my nursing school and I have decided (when closer to graduation) to sign up with the Public Health Corps. In the long term I would like to be regular active duty. I'm 29 now and I know that age and being a single mom (divorced) places an obsticle into signing up for active duty right now. I just want to wait for my kids to be a little older before going regular active service. I'm also hoping that with a good performance record in the USPHC to recieve an age waiver to go into what ever branch I want. I want to be in the Marine Corps in the long term.

You can definately sign up. The Army would be your best benefit at your age to get max benefits. But its really up to you what branch you want to enlist in. Medical jobs are a top non-combat job priority for most branches. Most likely you can expect to deployed to Germany at the very least. However more advanced medical training will be offered to you if you choose to remain active duty. If staying with your children in the short term is a main priority I wouldn't advise going active duty. Look to reserve jobs. Odds are you will be active at least 2 of your 6 years but thats better than being away for 4 years.

I was going to offer you some suggestions on your cross training, but I have to say that you have your priorities mixed up. If you go into the military and get killed or disabled in a serious manner, it will hurt your children and their children beyond your wildest nightmare.
Just imagine being a child born in 1857 whose Father goes off to the war in 1860 and gets killed or loses a limp at the Battle of BullRun. That father was a farmer and owned the farm but the wife lost it after her husband was killed.
She has no income and there is no Franklin D. Roosevelt Social Security yet, so she has to marry almost any man that would have her. That man turns out to be drunken veteran of the Civil War and never amounts to much because of mental health problems and alcohol addiction as a result of Combat trauma.
He abuses the kids in his condition and they all end up dead or alcoholics as a result.
This sort of experience goes from generation to generation and is still alive and wrecking families and kids lives through the years.
You just have to forget the military and get a good job and provide a stable and loving household for your children. It is called, Stopping the Pain!
