what is the secret in overcoming the idol worship of ego and the material things of this worldly life?

Very good question.

I would say that it is in the dissolution of the illusion that one is separate from one's Creator, and one's Divine Purpose.

This is usually accomplished through tests and trials which serve the purpose of purifying the Heart and the motives that spring from it.

In short, we will only give up what we have in exchange for that which we recognize is more valuable than what we have. When we accept that Oneness with God is more precious and more beneficial than even our own personal whims and opinions, and are living a Life that reflects such, then we have overcome the idolatry of "ego worship"...or "self-worship".

well, you just believe that all those things are "loans" from Allah...when you lost it, its because Allah took back the loan. but not because you're not being a good person. sometimes the loan were taken back because Allah knows better on whats good and whats not for you. so thats when you should realize the material thing in this life are temporary. even if you have all the wealth in the world, it cannot be taken with you when you're dead later

Well, once you realize that most people who have lots of money and wealth--but dont do anything good with it--are misrerable--Then you'll see how money doesnt buy Peace, Love Or Happiness..As far as idol worship---after you get sick and see that idols cant heal you--that will do the trick.
