I thought driver who won the pole spot in the NASCAR Nextel Cup races was awarded 5 points for that. It doesn't appear that is happening this year. Am I just imagining things????

Gordon got 170 total points for his third place finish. He got 5 points for leading a lap, and I think he got 165 for his 3rd place finish-- so it doesn't seem he got points-- but maybe 3rd place is only worth 160. I didn't mind the COT's-- tough to tell on Bristol how they'll shape up overall. Those tail fins look stupid though like some ghetto thug tried to pimp out their rides.

Ok..final add on-- it appears pretty clear they do NOTaward points for winning the pole. Does someone know definitively if they used to do that? Again, I swear winning the pole used to net you 5 bonus points. Thanks for all the answers!!!!!!!!!

There has been talk about awarding points for the pole position but I'm not aware of that ever happening in the past. The reward they get is the money Budweiser pays the pole winner and the driver's ticket to the following Budweiser Shootout at Daytona (plus starting ahead of everyone, of course). They did raise the winning driver's bonus to 10 pts. this year as opposed to the 5 pts. the winner recieved in the past.

NASCAR has never awarded points for Pole Position.
The Pole Sitter gets first choice of Pit Box and the best chance at leading the first lap, which would of course give the driver 5 points for a lap led.
All points must be earned from actual race performance and the ability to "wheel" a car on a solo hot lap has absolutely nothing, nothing to do with race performance.
Also, Pole sitters from the previous year get to have a little party in Daytona every February, that is currently called the "Bud Shootout". They can pick up a little extra cash, but NO POINTS!

No they do not award points at all for the pole. The reason most people think points are awarded is because in nearly every race ever ran, the driver on the pole has lead the first lap of the race. This gives them 5 points on the first lap only because of leading that lap. They do win a spot in the Bud Shootout and they get first picks in pit stall for that perticular race. So no actual points given for the pole position.

The most points a driver can earn in a single race is 195. If you win the race and lead the most laps you would receive 185 for winning, five bonus points for leading a lap and five bonus points for leading the most laps.
Finish Points
1st 185
2nd 170
3rd 165
4th 160
5th 155
6th 150
7th 146
8th 142
9th 138
10th 134
I believe all they get for winning the pole is a place in the Bud Shootout race, as it has always been.

They don't award points for the pole and I dont think they ever have, that has always been a criticism of the points system and it probably won't happen for some time.
Only way to earn points is by finishing position, lead one lap, lead the most laps, and the race winner (this year) gets a extra 5 points compared to last year

NASCAR does not give points for the pole, this was mentioned but with point system for the chase the points were scaped.
But the point break down has changed to give more points down the line to make a closer race for the chase.
That's all I have to say about that.

i have been watching nascar since 1975, and they have
never giving points for the pole.however since the driver
on the pole usually leads the first lap he would get 5 pts
for that. hope that helps.
