It's a book, but not merely a book. It was first a story, handed down from generation to generation of storytellers. The Illiad is one of the most important literary works of all time- along with the Bible and the Bhagavad Gita.

Oh, and Zeus is imaginary.

I believe the Illiad is a book, but I do believe Zeus exists.

Troy has been found. The book is based in reality.
Until, the Romans and the Christians went on their destructive rampages Zeus headed one of the better pantheons. The pantheon still exists but does not follow in Christianity's ways of offering paradise or hell. Gotta get them up to date in the Christian and muslim slash and burn type religious proselytizing. Zeus is being stubborn because he wants worshipers not brain burned slaves.
