My Dad Is Looking Into My AOL IM's! What Do I Do!?

my dad knows how to go into the computer and go threw some files and somehow look at my conversations! they arnt supose to be recorded right!? how does he do this? i wanna know so i can go and delet my conversations before he gets to read them. please! he is ruiening my life! Theres not use talking to him hes stubborn! so forget that! please help me so i can erase my messeges before he sees them!

What do you have to hide, if you wanna hide something, then its a safe bet its something that gonna get you in trouble. Short answer, grow up. Hes your DAD for a reason, its his jopb to protect you. I know you're sitting there saying "Well I know how to protect myslef and I know whats best" well guess what kiddo, you dont. And you will probably take a while to learn this.

I thinks its very good that your dad keeps and eye on what you do online, it shows you that he cares, atleast you have a father who cares about you enough to check to make sure your not getting yourself in danger or trouble.

You got alot left in life to learn and this is just 1 of the things that are on the way. Just have your conversation, you dad knows that you have a private life and hes just making sure your safe, I'm pretty sure hes not taking his free time to go to your school and start telling everyone "Hey, he like so and so, or he did this last night" He making sure your safe, beyond that, I'm sure he realizes you have a personal life.

Trust me, when you are a few years out of High School or College, maybe you'll have grown up enough to realize how much your father was trying to protect you and you'll be thankful for it.

I think you go into AIM's "EDIT" Menu, click settings. On the tab list to the left it should have the option "IM LOGGING" click that and uncheck the box that says "LOG IMS" Also try deleting the file path which is under the box marked "LOG CHATS" There is also a button in that category which says "DELETE LOG FILES" that one would probably help as well.

Hope this helps I would get mad if my Dad invaded my privacy like that.

Then stay off the computer and do your homework. Maybe he'd let up a little. Besides, it's not your computer anyways, so he has a right to look at what you're doing. If you were being nasty, he could potentially get in trouble for it. So get your own computer to gossip on and you won't have a problem.

Im not sure what version of AIM you use but for my version of aol trinton all conversations are stored in 'My Documents' in a folder called 'AIMLogger'. Also if you go into your AIM Setting and click on the 'IM Logging' and you can uncheck the box and stop logging your conversations. Good Luck.

Well, you do know that ANYTHING you put on the web can be viewed by ANYBODY, right? Like on IM when you click "send", your IP address goes through this thing and it's recorded quickly (which is where the goverment can see these things too) and then to the computer of your friend you're talking to. This works for e-mail, forums and other places where you can post/send things on the Internet-including MySpace.
My advice to you is to keep your conversation with your friends pretty decent. Don't say something that you wouldn't want your Dad to see. Talk to your friends in person or through e-mail. Your Dad can't into your e-mail account, so you'd be safe there. ^^You just put in your IM username and stuff and your messages can't be recorded on your computer files. See, when you download stuff it comes with millions of files and they store your buddylist and all of that stuff for future reference. With the link above you can chat without having to worry about that.
That reminds me, you could always go to C: drive on your computer and search for the AIM file and go through the files there and see if you can delete any conversations. All of your IM conversations that are being saved are most likely inside a file of AIM on your computer in C: drive.

you need to make your files private. he is probably going in the shared area and looking that way. if you are using windows on a pc then you can go to my computer, local disk , documents and settings, RIGHT click on your file and then properties and click the sharing tab at the top and check the box that says "make this folder private" . if this still does not work then get your friends that you wanna have private conversations with to email you instead or call you on the phone so he cant read your IMS.

If you use yahoo IM, go to your Little IM screen hit contacts and scroll down to message archives click on it then erase your stuff. You gotta explore all your menu options to familiarize yourself with all the options!!
