Well until you really get to know him I am afraid that awkward silences are normal. Ask questions and encourage him to do the same... most of the time this will give you something to talk about.
It is good you are not ashamed, but remember that you will encounter many different people with many different opinions on mixed race couples. Some may not be so nice! All I can tell you is keep your head up high and don't let anything anyone says get to you!! I think it is silly that people can't just go with their hearts because some people are WAY to focused on skin pigment.
You may want to discuss with him (if you haven't) how he feels about the race thing... if nothing else you could have a really good conversation without the weird silence!!(I recomend watching the movie call "Something New" really good movie and though it is just a movie it can give you SOME idea of what you may be in for...just watch it it's a great movie if nothing else lol)
Good luck to you both!!!

It matters what you two have together when you're physically together. You can overcome the awkwardness when you're apart because you have great affection for one another and all that. He's probably shy. Maybe you'll have to make the first move. And it doesn't matter what people think of you now because you create your own destiny and you're gonna live your entire life knowing the decisions you made and if you don't go out with this guy because you two are different races, you'll be giving into peer pressure.
I don't think you should care what people think about your race. Yes, it's gonna be a different experience, but that doesnt have to be bad. About your other problem, I think you need more time talking instead of affection. Affection is good but you also need lots of communication to make a succesful relationship. So just try to spark up a conversation with day to day things, as in how was your day or what do you think about that new law.

who cares what people think. just take each day as it come. obviously the feeling felt are no diff than that of a relationship with a guy from your own race(besides a few ignorant ppl). also, who doesnt have silences on the phone with the person the like? everyone experiences that. Now the fact that the silences are ackward may be problematic. When I talk to my S.O. the silences are the times when there are no words and only emotions to show. Well I wish you luck and to hell with ignorant, closed-mindedness.

I'm currently in an interracial relationship, and I'm not going to lie, it can be a little tough at times. You will have people stare at you and say things about you, but you can't let critics worry you. As long as you are happy, then more power to you girlfriend!
A great way to break some of the communication ice is to invite him and some of his friends to go bowling with you and some of your friends. He'll be more relaxed in a friendly environment and will be more willing to talk to you.
Hope this helps. Best of Luck!!

well, don't feel bad for the awkward silences! That always happens when you start to know a new person. if you like this guy, race shouldn't matter. you wouldn't care what people think, because you would like him for who he is. go out with him and don't care about his race, see him for the person he is.

What other people think is something you're going to have to get over or you'll never be able to have a real relationship anyway.
As for how to get him to open up, make a list of questions. Things about him you want to know and try to make them more than just "yes or no" questions. Then just sort of add them to the conversations. And after he's answered them for you, try to respond with your own answers to the same questions for him. He'll feel more comfortable and you'll get to know him better!
