Salt & Pepper Shrimp
Spicy salt and pepper shrimp makes an excellent appetizer or main course. The deep-fried shrimp shells turn a wonderful orange color, while the spicy seasoning adds extra flavor. Leaving the shells on protects the shrimp meat inside, so that it tastes very tender.
Although this is a Cantonese dish, it is sometimes made with Szechuan Salt and Pepper Mix - feel free to use this instead of the sea salt and ground pepper in the recipe if desired. (Use 1 1/2 to 2 teaspoons).
Serves 4
INGREDIENTS:
1 pound medium shrimp (about 25 shrimp), head removed, deveined, but not shelled
2 to 3 tablespoons tapioca starch or cornstarch, as needed
1 teaspoon sea salt or kosher salt
3/4 teaspoon freshly ground black, white, or Szechuan peppercorns
4 cups oil for deep-frying
PREPARATION:
Soak the shrimp in warm, lightly salted water for 5 minutes. Rinse in cold water, drain and pat dry with paper towels. Lightly coat the shrimp with the tapioca starch or cornstarch.
In a small bowl, mix the salt with the freshly ground peppercorns and set aside.
Heat the oil to 360 degrees Fahrenheit in a deep fat fryer, heavy saucepan with deep sides or a second wok (it is easiest not to deep-fry and stir-fry the shrimp in the same wok).
Carefully add the shrimp to the hot oil, 4 to 5 at a time, and deep-fry until they turn bright orange (about 40 seconds). Make sure the temperature does not fall below 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Carefully remove the shrimp with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Continue deep-frying the remainder of the shrimp.
Heat a wok on medium heat. Add the salt and pepper mixture and the deep-fried shrimp. Stir-fry briefly to coat the shrimp in the mixture (20 to 30 seconds). Serve hot.

A salt craving from being on a diet is probably just your body going through withdrawals from its normal salt intake. Just like when you give up chocolate, you might feel an acute (intense) craving for it (even though you don't actually NEED it). It most likely isn't a physical need going on, though. We already receive MUCH MUCH OVER our need of salt intake (and soup especially has massive levels of sodium). Plus, our body has physical reactions when we don't have enough salt. You would feel muscle cramps, etc.; if you were lacking salt to meet a dietary requirement. You might find that you need to increase your salt intake if you are exercising more or drinking more water. If you find that your craving isn't going away though; you can still give in to it, just do it the right way. A good way to get in that "salty" taste without eating chips though is to put some sea salt on fresh cut pineapple. (I know that it sounds weird, but I was served this in a cantina in Mexico and it was delicious and I never thought about missing out on those chips and salsa.) Or you can make some pea or carrot soup and slice up some apples, salt them, bake them and eat them together; a pretty yummy combination. Good luck with your diet and cravings!

For a snack take your favorite potato chips and add some fresh ground pepper, there're already salty or try a boiled egg.
You can add salt and pepper to almost anything.

I like peanuts with sea salt and cracked black pepper, but if you had some salted peanuts you just put pepper on them.

make yourself a baked potato with sour cream, home made mustard pickles and salt & pepper...
also, as strange as it sounds, fresh strawberries and freshly ground black pepper are awesome, a chef at a four diamond restaurant showed me that!
salt on an orange or watermelon is good as well, as weird as it sounds...
