Hahahaha. that's cute. My cat wakes me up. Yes, all the cats seem to do that. My cat just simply hits (yes, hits, not scratch) me on the forehead repeatedly until I wake up. Or he just uses some kind of mind thingy and stares at me, and I somehow wake up to find him stare down at me and then he runs to the door to notify me he wants to go out to eat, drink, or go to the litter box.
I don't think banging is very good for the cat...lol

he has learned that the only way he will be let out is if you do it.
he has also learned that you are behind closed doors when he needs you. Cats (any cat) is not stupid, just stubborn.
He knows he has to get in to tell you his needs and he is trying to open the door when instead he is really banging on it.
I have a cat that likes to sleep in out of the way places. I used to find my cabinet door open for no reason, then one night I heard banging and come to find it was my crazy cat trying to open the door, it she did not open it enough it would close so she would continue to open the door until it stuck and then she would climb in and go to sleep.
I guess now I have to ask a question on different stories that our member's cats do that are really crazy.

It's normal, in the night when my dog has to pee he rams the door! I get up and let him pee. You should really get a litterbox and so then you can get some sleep!!!

Genius? No. My cat does the same thing whenever he wants something at night. He's learned that the noise will wake me and get him attention, even if it's negative. Cats are smart animals in general.

We all have smart kitties! It actually is normal, they let you know. I have a Maine coon who weighs in at 25 pounds and has a head the size of a bobcat. He does the same thing, you should hear the door shake!

He sounds pretty smart, but you can be smart and get a cat flap so your cat doesn't have to bother you. My cat used to wake me up at all hours to go out until I got him a window flap that fits right in a raised window. It took a few weeks of holding the flap open for him before he learned to use it himself. Especially if you're not going to get him a litter box you should give him a way of getting out when he needs to. Check out the window kit option at http://www.dogdoors.com/cgi/smart.cgi?command=listitems&type=group&group=inexpensive . They actually raised the price on this since I got mine but it will be well worth it for good nights sleep and a happier self-reliant cat. Of course this is all contigent on having a window that opens onto something he can step out on.

My kitten Myna scratches the carpet underneath the door to get in and out of closed rooms. It's kind of like knocking.

This is very normal. My cat does this every time a door is closed and there is something she wants behind it.

I think that you should keep your cat indoors at all times, so that he doesn't dig up peoples flowerbeds, pee/poop in childrens sandboxes, or get run over on the road. Be a responsible pet owner and keep him inside.
