There's very few guard units that have deployed twice in the last 4 years. When you hear people talking about their sisters boyfriends brothers friends whos been to iraq 53 times he's either volunteering or he's air force of marine doing 4 month tours. Right now the guard is trying to transition to a system where a soldier spends one year out of every 5 on active duty not nessicarily in baghdad but maybe mexican border europe korea or an american base. But for the most part a very safe average is one out of every five years with a 2-3 months of training before activiation. and a long heads up for the soldiers to get their lives in order.

If the 'needs of the Army' demand it, as often as they like. There are legal limits, but they're very easy for the government to circumvent *if* they want to. If you read the contract, you should find a clause that the commitment can be extended indefinitely in the event of 'national emergency' or 'clear need' or some such phrasing; which more or less gives Uncle Sam a blank check to keep troops as long as the current conflict lasts. Not that they necessarily will, but they can.

My nephew joined the Guard as a medic and has been deployed 3 times - he's seen more active duty than anyone who joined the regular Army has. I agree with the first poster: "as many times as they want". And they don't need to explain their actions to anyone.
