You really are sounding like you are ready for a DSLR. You can get some models for $500-700, and maybe a used one for less. If you can't spend that much, then I would recommend getting a Canon Powershot S3 IS, which is more than a point and shoot camera (you will wantt o use it on program or manual mode for best pics, not on auto), though considerably short of a DSLR.

There are several other brand names with models similar to the Canon S3, and some might appeal to you more. These all have 12x zoom, a lot of settings, you can tweak it how you want.

I got one recently and love it ... I need a DSLR but could not afford one, nor can in the foreseeable future. If there is anyway you can get a DSLR, do it, but if not, look into some of these other models as well.

None of the compact digital cameras are going to really allow you to get the flexibility that an SLR camera will w/ interchangeable lenses. However, the new models for this year have been coming in the last 2 weeks or so, so you have good timing. The new sony dsct100 is really sleek and small, plus it has a pretty good zoom and takes pictures in 1080i resolution. Canon's new SD750 has a 3'' LCD screen and some pretty cool automatic scene functions, as well as face detection. But the newest and coolest as far as im concerned in that price range is the new Casio V7. I know most people dont like Casio, but it is compact, sleek, and comes in a wide range of cool colors. It also has TWO image stabilizers, one optical, one digital, so the pictures never come out blurry. It also has a light sensitive LCD screen so if it is bright outside the screen gets up to 3x brighter to make it easier to see, and it also has a 7x optical zoom which is by far the best for the true compact digitals. The Canon SD800IS is also a great camera, as it boasts one of the best image stabilizers on any camera on the market. All the cameras listed here range from 7-8.2 Megapixels, but megapixels should not be your primary concern since after about 7 the files just get bigger and fill up your memory card without any real apprieciable picture difference for most novice to intermediate photographers.

Sorry but the budget of $400 is just shy of a DSLR. That's really the only way to take a step up in quality due to the sensor size. If you could afford just $500 or $600, you would have many choices.

Anything more than 6mp in a compact digital camera makes each sensor too small. You give up contrast and color saturation.
