The truth is that poor ol' Vincent actually thought he sold a painting every once in awhile. At the time he killed himself he believed he had sold at least two dozen of them.

What had actually happened was that his brother Theo (who was an art dealer and operated a gallery) would tell Vincent that he had sold one and gave Vincent the money (which came out of Theo's own pocket). Then Theo would take the work, the so-called 'sold' painting, and store it away and keep it for himself.

We assume Theo was doing this out of love for his brother and to encourage Vincent to keep painting. No one knows for sure if Vincent was ever aware of what his brother was doing.

On the books, officially, Theo's gallery did sell one of his paintings to a German. I don't remember the name of the painting but remember that it was a landscape.

In a round about way you could say he sold two because he painted a portrait of the doctor who treated his melancholy and gave it to the doctor as a gift. The doctor liked the painting and tried to pay him but Vincent refused the money. It wasn't a sell, but at least it was an offer to sell.
