I'm from Liverpool, and despite the media image of thick scousers I knew that, and I say fifth and sixth.

The English language has been changing for hundreds and hundreds of years. Why do people say 'three times' instead of 'thrice'? Why do people say 'haitch' instead of the correct 'aitch' when proncouncing the capital letter 'H'? Because languages evolve.
I get annoyed when I see things like 'January 7' instead of 'January 7th' (it's popping up a lot lately, mostly in American media) and '... was released Tuesday' instead of 'was released on Tuesday'.
Unfortunately we all have to be a little bit more felxible in our perception of English. Being English myself, I consider the language 'mine' (in the loosest sense of the word) but realise that it's no more mine that it was the French's, the Vikings', Normans', etc, etc.

People are slowly losing their english to slangs. Why they do, well God knows. Soon there will be serious problems with their reading and writing which will follow if everyone was to follow that trend but fortunately it is not everyone. Some people do pronounce it correctly. I personally do and always will do and so does everyone in my family and all my friends.
