the original big red (man o war, records every time he touched the track) or the second big red (secretariat, enormous three year old campaign, and great as a 4 year old also on both surfaces) come to mind right away(I realize they rolled the Belmont surface to make it ultra fast and that there were a half dozen track records run on it in a two month period afterwards, but the 31 length win still looked nice)...I followed Cigars career, watched him run in the grade 3 race (turf) at bay meadows late in his 3 year old campaign and saw him race at other tracks afterwards...was in attendance when he lost in the set-up mandellas horses put him in at the Pacific Classic...he had a great two years, beat all the competition they put in front of him, but surprisingly enough he never ran a smashing time, just won... a lot like biscuit...didnt do much early in his career but got good for a period of time and rode it out, was looking forward to him breeding (being a palace music he had Northern Dancer influence stamped all over him, but...nothing but blanks) honorable mention to Dr Fager...a real speedball who was handicap horse, sprinter, horse of the year, grass horse of the year and set a world record sprinting in the same year (with 132 pounds on his back)pretty amazing...also one of my all time favorites who was still running when I started being a track rat,Ole Bob Bowers son John Henry...

No doubt that Secretariat was one of the greatest.
However, my chioce for the greatest would be "Man O' War".
Honorable mention: "Whirlaway" . He would win Grade I
races dispite running along the outside rail, or being many lengths behind the pack during the first couple furlongs. (See the 1941 Preakness Stakes on Youtube). Held the Belmont track record for 32 years until Secretariat came along.

The Affirmed -Alydar races are legendary with the nod to Affirmed. He was a great horse and Triple Crown winner.John Henry was a great horse also. After he was gelded,he went on to be a great horse, with a long career. But my vote goes to Big Red;Secretariat. He was a man among boys in his time. The 1973 Belmont is probably the single greatest performance by any horse.

That's a difficult question to answer: you cannot compare National Hunt (jumps) horses to flat horses and you cannot compare sprinters to stayers. Also are we talking about the greatest achievements, the gutsiest performances or sheer longevity?

In a recent poll Racing Post readers were asked to pick their favourite 100 horses, the mighty ARKLE came out on top and I cannot disagree with them.

For those of you that don't know who Arkle was - shame on you - read this article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arkle

My other "greatest" horses would be Dubai Millennium, Persian Punch, and the wonderful Ouija Board.
