An I-20 is not a visa!!! It's a paper proving that you have been admitted into or are enrolled as a full time student at a University in the U.S. The visa you have should be F-1 visa.
If you are already in the U.S, why didn't your school's international students office inform you the details about not working off-campus( you can take student labor jobs)?
As far as I know, since 9-11, the immigration has put all foreign students under very tight wurveillance, so you better not get yourself in trouble

As already mentioned, the I-20 is simply a form that shows you have been accepted as a foreign student in a US school. You then have to apply for an F-1 student visa at your nearest US embassy or consulate.

Employment is not permitted, except on campus or with written permission of the school.
