I have dark blonde-light brownish hair. It is about 6 inches past shoulder length. It seems to be "fried". It stays like this even after I get it cut. I used to wash it every other day when it was fried. Now I wash it everyday to see if it would make a difference, but it doesn't. I brush my hair like a million times a day. That might be part of the problem, but I'm not sure. I'm not in the sun much (except in the summertime). I've never died or bleached my hair. I hardly ever blow dry my hair or use any kind of iron with it. I don't use much styling products in it until recently (gel+hairspray). So why is my hair like this? And are there any inexpensive ways to fix it? Or at least to prevent it from getting worse? Thanks so much!!! All answers are greatly appreciated =)

To "start over" use a clarifying shampoo to remove any residue from styling products and prep your hair for a deep conditioning treatment. Neutrogena Anti-Residue Shampoo is the best and Joico K-Pak conditioner or Patene deep conditioners are good.
Pre-natal vitamins are supposed to have extra nutrients that help your hair and nails be healthy.
Then use a conditioning shampoo and conditioner every day or every other day. (Joico K-Pak shampoo & conditioner, which can be used as a mask or ask a daily conditioner.)
Use a super absorbant hair towel (Aquis or The Body Shop). Then spray a leave in conditioner. Use a wide toothed comb and start from the bottom to comb out tangles.
Never brush your hair while it is wet. Choose a brush w/ smooth bristles and brush only 1 time a day to distribute oils from your scalp.
Apply a glossing/smoothing serum, Kiehl's Silk Groom or jojoba oil to tame your hair and keep it smooth. Both of these products are kind to your hair and work as a leave-in conditioner.
Try to let your hair air dry as often as possible.
As for styling, you can make a sophisticated ponytail by wearing it low, wrapping a section of your hair around the elastic and securing it with a pin. You can also use a ribbon for a touch of whimsy.
Hair bands are in this season. Plain thin ones are very classic. Or you can use a scarf for a retro '60s look. You can embellish plain ones with hot glue and buttons or beads for a casual or evening look.
You can make your hair into a neat bun. For a plain but finished look, pin down strays w/ hair pins that have tortoise shell on one side. (Goody makes them.) For a dressier effect use hair pins w/ pearls or rhinestones.
For a casual look, make a messy bun or chignon.
You can braid your hair & wear the braid down. Or you can loosely braid your hair & create a bun.
BTW, you can braid your hair after shampooing and let it dry. Take out the braids and you'll have a loose wave/crimp that's perfect for a beachy, summer look.
Allure & InStyle are really good magazines for hair style ideas.

Brushing your hair is damaging. Quit doing that more than 1-2x a day or if you're going out, etc. Do you use a good shampoo and conditioner? These don't necessarily have to be really expensive. Try a deep conditioner once a week. You can find cheap ones in any drugstore. Look for moisturizing products (including shampoo/conditioner). Hairspray and gel use alcohol (esp. the cheap ones) so invest in a good alcohol-free one. Cheaping out isn't a good idea, sometimes you have to pay more to get more.

Its actually not good for your hair to wash it every day. It definitely dries it out. Thats what all my hairdressers tell me. My hairdresser says she washes her hair once a week and it looks nice to me. I personally wash my hair every other day because I have sports, but thats just me. Washing your hair everyday is probably the main reason your hair is so "fried". Also, try extra moisture conditioner. And using gel and hairspray will also chemically damage you hair if you use too much...so try to limit them along with the blowdrying/flat-ironing. That helps. And dont brush your hair so much it'll give you split ends. Hope this helps your problem! : )

what is happenning is that instead of getting all of your split ends cut off all at once, it sounds like you are just getting a tiny bit of them cut off at a time, leaving a few inches at the bottom that are still split. Next time you get your hair cut, ask the stylist to tell you honestly how much of you hair is dead, and get all of that cut off at once. I know it sounds like a lot to cut off, but just taking off part of the split ends will never fix the problem, actually it can make it much worse, as this can make the hairs split up even farther on the hair shaft. After you have done this, do a conditioning treatment weekly, never use a brush on wet hair (wide tooth comb only when it is wet), and never put you hair in a ponytail when wet. These things all cause more breakage, and will only make it worse.

Sounds like an internal problem - meaning you're not eating the right foods, etc. There are over the counter vitamins you can try that are made special for your hair.
Have you tried deep conditioning treatments? The kind you leave on for at least 30 mins? You can even ask a hairstylist apply one of these for you.
The other thing you could try is changing your pillow case. Use a satin or silk pillowcase. Cotton/flannet pillow cases cause major split ends.

I would get a deep conditioner and a leave-in conditioner and stop washing your hair everyday. Stop brushing so much lol don't brush it when it is wet comb it with a wide tooth comb or wait to brush it when it is dry.
Hope this helps good luck :)

condition only the ends. What will reallly help is get some "Queen Helene" oil treatment and just put pn the ends that seem to be damaged. Comb thru it and let it dry natural. or when you are geting a suntan outside let the heat from the sun penetrate to your hair and let it soak in.

I see you wash your hair too much. You take too much care of it. When you wash it too much it takes all the natural oils out of your hair causing it to dry. Try washing it about every other day rather than every day. It should make a difference. Good Luck!

okay, so i think there are lots of ways to prevent damaged hair because i had it myself also. here's a few..
1. buy hair vitamins, but make sure the ingredients aren't chemicals or anything. there are alot of good ones at health stores i.e. bread and circus
2. read the ingredients of your shampoo. mine used to have tons of chemicals that i couldn't even pronounce. so i bought shampoo+conditioner at a health store and the ingredients were much more simple. my hair was softer and shinier, stayed clean longer, and grew much quicker.
3. every so often use a hair mask that you can make at home. i've heard of tons of ingredients like avocado, olive oil, orange peels, there are tons of recipes for them online and they help alot.
4. don't wear your hair tied back in an elastic to much. i forget the reason, i think its like it makes the hairs weaker, or breaks them or something.. haha but i know it helps, because i wore my hair down more often and it helped.
well i hope that helps, i feel like im forgetting somethings, but whateveh.. good luck :)
