No visa needed to visit your friend.
Passport needed only if you are flying into Canada. By land or sea, official photo I.D. and proof of citizenship is needed until Jan 2008.
To move to Canada, you have to go through the entire immigration process. If you get married, you can live in Canada on a Visitor Visa while you are applying for permanent resident status, but on a visitor visa you cannot work or go to school, nor qualify for the National Health Care.
Applying from inside Canada, you can expect the application process to take 9-12 months, with your spouse sponsoring you. From outside Canada, 12-18 months if you are married, and applying through family class. 1-3+ years if you are not married and applying for permanent resident status other than family class. The application process will cost you $1,200 in fees and associated costs.

All you need is a passport , not a VISA. Even if you drive across the boarder. This is something you need to know, when you get your money changed over, go to a bank and get it exchanged there. If you go to a grocery store or even a currency exchange you will get screwed over. And keep the whole being American on the DL. Also if you see "poutine" on a restaurant menu order it. It's french fries, a certain gravy and an awesome cheese. Try it with mayonnaise. Restaurants tend not to put ice in the drinks, so if you want ice in your drink ask for it. And don't be alarmed when you see a bottle of mayonnaise on the restaurant tables next to the ketchup and mustard. Hope this helps.

At present you don't need a passport to go to Canada by car.
But you need it by air or ship.
Next year for any way of travelling.
And the problem is not going to Canada, the problem is getting back into the US.
To move to Canada to get married, Do it properly, Contact Canada Immigration for the rules, and follow them.
If you take shortcuts, you will be deported.
If you are an American Citizen, You do not need a visa to visit.
