This seems to happen to me a lot while im walking. I come across someone and we both meet up. I move to one side and he moves to the same side, i try to move to another side and he moves to the same side. I just stood there and he also just stood there.
We both laughed and I just told him "you first", was that the right thing to do :) or how should I avoid this next time?

Stay to the right, unless, it is a woman walking down the middle or to the left, then stay to the street side of the walk (kind of a chivalrous thing to do to 'protect' her from traffic)

Btw, in my experience, the 'dance only happens when neither person is paying attention, therefore I try to anticipate what oncoming pedestrians are going to do long before we meet.

In the event that the 'dance' is unavoidable, something I do is to make "you first" bow. It usually elicits at least a :-)

This can't always be avoided because too many people are fools.
This is what is supposed to happen:
In most countries, people drive on the right. When walking, imagine you are driving and step to the right. Oncoming traffic should instinctively step to the right also. All pedestrian collisions should be averted in this way.
If you are still blocking each others path because the person approaching you chooses to play mirror instead of driver, then simply turn your body to be at a right angle with the other person (imagine you are a door) and say (as you already do) "you first" or "after you". Once they have passed through the "door", you may close it and be on your way.

PS - If you live in a left side driving country, step to the left.

When I get into the dance, I usually stop, we both laugh for a second, and then I let them pass.

I've never heard of that right rule. That sounds pretty good; if only more people knew about it.

What you are doing is probably the best way to handle it. In most cases, when I'm doing the dance, I typically let them go first. The few seconds I lose in the process of saying "go ahead" are worth it if I don't cause hurt feelings.
