You would have to purchase a copy of Windows XP that is genuine. You can get an OEM version on eBay. It is the Windows software, just that an OEM copy is cheaper. Just make sure that the Product Key sticker is on the laptop so you can make sure to activate Windows when you reload it with the CD. If it won't activate, then the person used the product key too many times. It is no problem, all you have to do is activate over the phone and explain what happened and what you are doing. They will ask if you have this Windows copy installed on another computer. Just say no and they will give you an activation key to put into the computer to activate Windows. If you don't want to spend money, then just make sure that you have the sticker on the laptop and ask around for a copy of XP.

Unfortunately this is a probelm for a lot of people right now. I have even worked with business clients that have that pop-up and cannot get their updates. There are a few solutions - the best solution is to buy a "real" copy of softeware which you can buy off the web from a number of legitimate vendors. If you want it on the cheap, I would go to someplace like viosoftware.com and buy a home/student edition. The other solutions are going through Microsoft - you simply a "victom" of pirated software so it will not be too big of an issue (however it is more expensive to do it this way). The last method (and probably the cleanest/easiest method) is to buy a cheap copy that you can use another software tool available on the web (sorry - the name escapes me at the moment) that will allow you to replace the counterfiet license key with teh new one. This way you do not have to reload software. However, if you have all of the software that you need in hand already, I would opt for getting a cheap real copy (option one above) and completely wipping out the drive and starting over witrh the new copy. CAUTION - if you do it this way be sure to lookup and DOWNLOAD all of the drivers for the specific laptop that you have so that you can install without issue after reloading the OS. If you have tow partitions I would just through them on the "D" partion and just reformat and install the new OS on the C partition. Then when it starts asking you for drivers for "new hardware found" you can just browse to the drivers on the D drive. If you don't have a D drive burn them to a CD (or do both so that you always have a CD of the drivers). This is all assuming that your laptop does NOT have a licensed copy of XP on it (but was ME, 2000 or some other version where MS won't assist with activating or fixing the problem.)

Question - did this computer go through a group f upgrades that might have flagged the origial OS as though it was on a different computer? This can happen on legit OSs. If you have the matching for XP (the RIGHT one id including home or proper pro match) MS should assist in correcting.

Well, you can keep using Windows XP, even though it's not updated. However, I'm worried that Microsoft might try to sue you for using an illegal copy of Windows, so perhaps you should either get a new copy of Windows XP or upgrade (if your computer supports the higher requirements) to Windows Vista.

Alternatively, you can ditch Windows altogether and install Ubuntu Linux. Find a geek friend and have him help you install Linux.

Look on the laptop, if you have a Windows XP sticker, call Microsoft. They have gone nuts telling people with legit copies this same thing! So check first. If you don't have the sticker, get a legal copy.
