How can you recognise magic mushrooms in appearance? (i have mushrooms growing in my garden and i need to know the difference!!!)

Ignore the answer that the grow in cow poop. That's one species of about 40.
The best thing to do is to be SHOWN by someone who knows. Thats the only REAL guarantee. The ones which grow in the forests of Australia are MILES from the nearest cow and most don't have any blue on them at all.
The thing about books is that they can be pretty wide of the mark in many cases - especially with the Genus Psilocybe. I've looked through every book on mushrooms and fungi available in Australia and they're usually pretty different because the authorities want it that way - they'd rather we stay ignorant. Same with a lot of websites....

I'd be very very careful about screwing around with mushrooms. Many poisonous mushrooms look exactly like edible mushrooms, even to the experienced person.

The best way to find out if it contains Psilocybin (the chemical that gives you the effect you're probably looking for) is that there are blue streaks on the stem of the mushroom.
But I'd stick with the rule of if you don't know exactly what it is or where it originally came from, you probably shouldn't be eating it.
