Mostly because of better Public Relations.
Marines get thier arsses handed to them on a regular basis. Take Falluja. The Army's 82nd AB captured and held it from march of 2003 to Feb of 2004. They were then releived by USMC and by June of 2004 all control had been lost. Not until later that summer, with the help of the Army's 1 Cav division, was control regained.
Or how about the largest amphibous assualt in human history, D-Day, an Army operation.
The record shows that the Army is vastly superior when it comes to fighting battles. If the job was to make sweet commercials, well then the Marine Corps would win.

Jim H said it best with,
"...there has always been a friendly rivalry between the services. The mature people take as just that , a friendly rivalry, and they respect their brothers in uniform from different services. There are a few immature people who take it seriously..."
I always find it funny that the most ardent supporters of certain branches (and also the ones that are first to bash other services) usually fall into two types of people. Those that never served, but know someone in that branch; and those that only served one term (about 4 years). For those that never served, it seems a little ridiculous to be bashing a service if you never had the courage to join one yourself. And for those single termers, if your branch was so great and awesome, then why did you get out?
Additionally, people need to learn to do some research before saying things. I won't point fingers, but many times I will read "answers" on here and it is blatantly obvious that the answerer really has no idea what they are talking about. Examples (more of a compilation of ideas I've seen passed around lately, rather than anything said specifically):
"Marines are the first to fight." - Actually US Special Operations are the first to fight in every major, and many minor, operations.
"Navy basic training is only for weaklings, not for real men." - I would like someone to tell that to a Navy SEAL.
"Army is an occupation force, not a strike force." - So Operation Overlord was not considered an offensive maneuver? If you want present day examples, look up Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
"The Air Force is a bunch of cowards that are afraid of ground combat." - TACP might disagree.
Finally, people need to take some history lessons. Once again, no finger pointing, but many people on this forum show complete ignorance on the actual facts of historical events, battles, and the overall history of the US Military.

Marines are coastal strike forces. The Army is designed for interior operations. Marines need less support than soldiers and are ideal for fast strikes. Every branch of service has specialists. Neither is better than the other. They are just different.

well lets see...you didn't see the army taking Iwo Jima, or Tarawa, or guadalcanal. Oh and what about Mogadishu? I am not speaking ill of the brave army men who died there, but there is a reason the Marine Corps exists and that is to take care of things properly. In WWI there was a reason the Germans called the Marines Devil Dogs. They earned that title because no matter what the situation, or what the cost they always came out on top. Chesty Puller is someone you need to look up. "All right, they're on our left, they're on our right, they're in front of us, they're behind us... they can't get away this time."- yea you did not hear a soldier saying that. Plus Marines have the hottest women!!! -Damn Proud Girlfriend. And ladies....if you have not had the pleasure of seeing a Marine in dress blues...you have got to! It will get your heart rate up. LOL!!

Speaking as ten year active duty veteran, there has always been a friendly rivalry between the services. The mature people take as just that , a friendly rivalry, and they respect their brothers in uniform from different services. There are a few immature people who take it seriously. They are the trouble makers and usually get kicked out before their time is up.

The Marines are "elite." That was the whole purpose in creating them. To make an elite force.
However, I wouldn't say that has anything to do with individual Marines. The individuals in the Marines aren't better than the individuals in the Army.
Plus, the Army is better at some stuff.

The truth is Marines are proud to be Marines, soldiers are proud to be soldiers, sailors are proud to be sailors and airman are proud to be airman. There has always been friendly inter-service rivalry but at the end of the day they are all the best in the world at their assigned war missions and will fight to the death to defend America and its way of life. I have seen the US Army in a firefight, and I have seen the Marines in a firefight.
The Marines are better, sorry. Whats really sad is that the Marines tend to be better even though the Army tends to get all the newer, better, more expensive equipment.
Marines get the harder missions for a reason, usually because they have a higher chance of accomplishing it.
Look at the way the Army recruits its people. When you see an Army commercial its a bunch of sh-t about what they are going to give you.
When you see a Marine commercial its always some guy overcoming a really hard challenge.
People join the Marines for a reason to fight for their country, they know its going to be harder. Unlike in the Army where they join to see how much college money they can get, or to get a job skill.
Overall the Marines recruiting strategy attracts people who end up making better warriors. If your a competent warrior in the Marines you get a Marine uniform. If your a competent warrior in the Army you have to sew on some extra patch in addition to the 20 other ones you most likely already have, and then you have to get a new beret thats a different color.
But...The US Army in my opinion is the best army in the world so good job I guess.

Being the first to be sent into most combat situations gives them my vote to be called better than the Army and their level of discipline is mush higher than the Army.
