So I adopted him at the SPCA. It said that he is a Golden retriever. I searched the WEB to find out more and most Websites say that if the have a bit of black hair it's a fault. What does that mean? My dog has a tiny bit of black hair on ears and tail. Does that mean he is not a Golden retriever?

He looks exactly like a Golden retriever (the darker kind not blond) with a bit of black on ears and tail.

Oh, don't worry about him being a champion! He was already one from the minute I saw his picture on the Web!

Firstly, I'd like to congratulate you for adopting from the SPCA. Good for you to re-home a homeless dog. Firstly, the SPCA can not claim that a dog is a purebred unless it has a tattoo in it's ear. They can be open to a lawsuit that they can't afford. By the breed standard, any black hairs on a golden are to be disqualified. Now, that is if you want your golden to go through the proceeds to become a "champion". He is still a "golden"...he just has a few black hairs. My is a true-blue tattooed golden that has a few black hairs. I don't need him to be a champion...I need him to be "my boy". Enjoy your dog...you've got a golden. Yeah, it's a fault if you want to show him for his championship. You hopefully just want a nice dog to enjoy in your life...have fun. They are great dogs!

Well, it sounds like he might be mostly golden retriever. Some times when a dog is given to the SPCA, the owner knows what breed it is. Sometimes not. A lot of times at the SPCA they don't really know what the dog is and they go by looks and by guessing. Call them and ask them. It's possible that your dog is pure bred but what they call "Pet Quality" meaning that he doesn't look enough like breed standard to win at shows. Maybe he is a mix, just mostly golden retriever. That doesn't make him a bad dog he's probably a great dog. Mixed breeds are known for their hardiness because they are less prone to the weaknesses of a more inbred dog.

Although, according to the rules in dog contests, he wouldn't be able to join, because I professional would see that he isn't "pure blood". However, that just means that he may have been bred with a cream-colored golden retriever and a bronze-colored golden retriever. By pure breeds, they are inbred, but are so then more vulnerable to diseases. I have a golden, that has a horrid skin disease that is incurable with medication and he always gets scabs and bleeds, but that's because he's a result of inbreeding. We always have to buy medicine for skin rashes every month because he gets it so often and we don't want to put him to sleep.
So be thankful for having a healthy dog, and treat him like family!

Chances likely the dog may be a mutt because purebred golden retrievers are completely golden blond colored.

No he in not purebred. Goldens have no black hair anywhere except a little black hair at the end of the muzzle (near the nose) is acceptable.

just means that there is another breed in the woodpile somewhere. oesn't matter though, I am guessing you are not in possesion of AKC papers on that dog, so more than likely you have a 90% golden retreiver dog, that will love you for saving him and giving him a good home. Check his feet too and see if they are webbed. They just love water.

No not a pure Golden. Goldens have no black fur in them at all. Not even on the tips of ears or tail.

It doesn't mean that he is not a GR it only means that if you wanted to show him that the black hair would be considered a fault. It means nothing to you as you have no papers, forget about it.
