The other day i was at a friend`s house and his dog gave me what i can only describe as an angry look. He stared at me like he was about to pounce on me and bite my head off - no small dog either ! I felt a bit scared i`ll admit, and my friend said to the dog, "hey why you lookin at her like that ? " I thought god it`s not just me then, he`s noticed as well ! Then strangely, the dog came and laid at my feet, really made himself comfortable and laid out full length at my feet ! Then my friend said, "Aw look he likes you. " I`m female and the dog is male, and my friend is male if that means anything, and he`s a platonic friend so the dog obviously not jealous or anything, we were just standing in the kichen talking. He is a staffordshire bull terrior. Any ideas what might have been going on there ? Not that i fancy him or anything, so no vibes there to be picked up by the dog.( i mean i don`t fancy my friend not the dog. No i don`t fancy the dog either - definately not.)

I have a large rottweiller who also stares out people he deosent like.
Dont look at the dog when he is in this mode it is challenging behaviour most guard breeds do it.
Avert your gaze to just beyond the dog show no interest in it it will.soon lose interest.

But, does the dog fancy you? The dog is used to being around males so it probably doesnt know what to make of you. I have a male parrot that has the same reaction to women. He puffs up to three times his size and stomps all over the place while making a biting motion.

Talk to it and try to get to it to relax. The more it sees you, the more comfortable it will be (and the safer you will be).

He was deciding whether you could be trusted or not.

Think back to what you were doing at the time he gave you the look. Were you moving in a way or making a sound he could have felt was a threat to his owner?

maybe he was just checking you out, i mean like trying to see if he could trust you, my boxer does the same to every single new person that comes into my house, she sniffs, gives them the stare, if she doesn't like them she just walks away or barks at them, if she likes them she'll come closer so they will pet her or do the same thing as your friend's dog -lay on their feet... remember dogs depending on the breed- specially a straffordshire bull terrier - can look mean or nice, it's hard to read their emotions... plus dogs with bigh cheeks sometines get them trapped betwwen teir jaws, when this happens to my boxer i always have to tell her tasha don't look mean, then she'll lick her lips and her face go back to normal, i also have to admit she sometimes looks kinda freaky and it creeps everyone -me included... so enjoy your new friend- the dog, of course and just talk to him softly, he'll approach with a nicer face next time!

The dog was wary of you at first, as he didn't know whether you were a threat to his person. But when his person gave him a mild rebuke, the dog obeyed him and accepted you. He's a good dog. He's got his person's best interests at heart.

You are a stranger , on his teritory taking up the time of his pack leader. He is bound to be wary of you. Talk to him in a gentle voice and when he has seen you a few more times he will accept you into the pack.

It could be for many reasons. Maybe he could smell another dog on you. Maybe you were wearing a scent that upset him. Dogs are sensitive to scents. Maybe he expected a treat from you..
