By whose standards do you know what good is? And do these standards change? How often? every 50 yrs or so? When people marry their pets and people get an extra set of genitles and it is common place and they enjoy this, can this be good?

The standards of God, as written in the Bible. God's standards never change. They were the same standards, 100 years ago as today.

these things come from my parents, my loved ones, my peers and friends and the society that surrounds me. We see some convergence in morals, for instance, sane people agree that murder is bad. But the death penalty is something that not everyone agrees on, for instance. And not too long ago a lot of people thought slavery was a swell idea.

"When people marry their pets and people get an extra set of genitles and it is common place and they enjoy this"

marrying pets is out. We've pretty much agreed that this type of thing (marriage, sex, etc) should be between consenting adults (at least, I think we have). Note that this includes homosexuals, at least in my definition.

And really, if people want to graft on a second set of genitals and they enjoy it, why not? They are not hurting anyone else with it, and that is also one of the core 'standards' we are converging on.

Each individual must decide for themselves what is good or bad. Society as a whole sets certain standards but they are not aleays accept by us all. In a thousands years, no matter how many people get married to their pets, it will never be a good thing. Somethings will always be considered bad, killing, stealing, hitting your parents, following this yet. Although there is a seperation of state and religion many of our laws parrallel the ten comandments. Good comes from within each of us, it is up toi each individual as to how much they will comprimise themselves.

Ae religious standards good? Let's see. According to the 2005 United Nations Human Development report ,Norway, Iceland, Australia, Canada, Sweden Switzerland, Belgium, Japna, Netherlands, Denmark and the UK are among the least religious countries on earth. They are also have the longest life expectancy, highest adult literacy, highest per capita income, highest average educational attainment, greatest gender equality, lowest homicide rate, lowest infant mortality, even lowest rate sof abortion. Insofar as there is a Wester Europe crime problem, it is largely caused by the immigration of people from highly religious third world countries. For example, 70% of France's jail inmates are Muslim, not atheist. The fifty nations ranked lowest on the above parameters are unswervingly religious. The US is uniquely religious among Western democracies and also has high rates of homicide, abortion, teen pregnancy, STDs, infant mortaility. Even within the US the most religious regions, Southern and Midwestern states, have higher levels of the above social dysfunction that the very liberal Northeast. It's no secret that "red states" are red because of conservative Christians. But of the 25 ctiies with lowest crimes rates, 62% are in blue states. Of the 25 most dangerous cities, 76% are in red states. 3 of the 5 most dangerous are in very religous Texas. The 12 states with highest burglary are red states. 25 of the 29 highest for larceny are red states. Of the 22 states with the highest murder rates, 17 are red states.

Widespread belief in God and religious standards does not seem to do much to fix social problems. Perhaps the opposite. Or it could simply be that crime and theism both flourish whever ignorance abounds.

There's only one rule that you need to follow, and you should already have it written in your genes:

'Treat other people as they would wish you to treat them'

That's an axiom that all social animals have. It holds societies together. Most social animals just get on with it. Meerkats, for instance, know exactly what they should do, and what they should not even if they want to. If they do Bad things and get caught they expect to be punished, and they are. If they do Good, they expect to be rewarded, and they are.

For their own - Bad - reasons, some humans have made subtle changes to this rule, and they teach those modification to their children, so they stick. One example of this in use by a large group is: 'Love thy neighbour as thyself' Sounds similar enough, but leaves plenty of room for being abominable to people 'for their own good' if they don't meet *your* standards.

Ignore changing standards. Civilisation continually attempts to conform more closely to the Rule, but it's successive approximation. You don't need to follow changing fashions about who's Good and what's Bad, just stick to the Rule. Anything good enough for meerkats is good enough for humans.

Well they would be your standards! What you feel is right for you is what counts. Yes standards change for each situation that you come across. If you have an open mind. and can enjoy life as it is then you can enjoy anything and when you can do that then of course all is good!

The Buddha made it clear... any behavior that doesn't cause harm and suffering, and is altruistic, etc. is virtuous.

Falling back on the slippery slope argument as a pathetic excuse to deny the LGBT community rights is not virtuous behavior, most assuredly. It's commonly known that pedophilia, bestiality and other issues cause suffering... two NORMAL adults or people expressing their LOVE for one another doesn't cause HARM nor suffering except in your own ego-ridden mind.

Why not use our own brains to figure out what is good. We don't need a book that was written 2000 years ago to tell us what's good. Understanding other people and being tolerant is good. Learning about life is good. Helping other people is good.

I was married to my hamster for 11 years but she recently ran away with my python. All is well, though, I have an extra set of genitals to occupy myself.
