I just sit here on the computer, watch TV, or read sometimes. It's not heatlhy relaxation either, I'm probably depressed.

It's chronic; I've been like this for years. In highschool I had homework to keep me occupied, but now I just have these endless days of 'nothingness'. I may wake up, get on the computer, and then just go back to bed later because the day looks absolutely hopeless.

Yeah, get a hobby...

Is it possible I'm afraid to apply myself? How do I 'ease' my way into being more active? There are lots of things I think about doing, like writing stories or drawing...or just cleaning my house, but I can never figure out how to start...

Yes, there is chronic depression. If I have a 'want to do nothing' day, I am at my worst. I am so active normally to the point of not being able to sit too long..

Depression can be so debilitating....nothing seems to inspire you. I would see about meds...keep tryin to find the right one...and correct dosage....meds are not all the same...

The more you've dealt with it, the easier it is to know the symptoms.....and the true test of depression....is the length of time you've had it...time beyond 2 weeks is considered to need a doc's check.

There isn't a stigma attached to depression as in the past..it is a matter of the chemicals in the brain or lack of..and it really affects moods. At least you are aware that something doesn't feel right.....please check with your doc. Even a small dose of med can make all the difference. You may not need to take long-term either. It isn't just the 'blues'. It isn't something that will easily go away unless treated. Wish you all the best.

Well, I'm not so sure that writing stories or drawing would help as much because you still don't need to leave the house to do these things.
Maybe if you took some art classes or something that might be fun? It will be good to pick an activity that you need to leave the house to do.
Make sure you pick something fun, otherwise you won't stick to it.
If you want, you can just start with having a little ten minute walk around the block or something. There will be things for you to do, you just need to look around for them. See if there are any clubs that you could join, or if there are any classes (e.g art classes, photography classes) that you could join.

As for starting.. Well, if you're about to start something and you're not sure if you want to, just think that if you don't start this time, you might not start the next time, and it'll just be a vicious cycle. Be brave. Go ahead. Take the first step.
I know you can do it. :)

Good luck!

There are so many ways to occupy yourself. It is harder once your out of school, because the clubs were right there in your face and you didn't have to search for it.
However, try to find volunteer work. Go to a hospital, an animal shelter, museums or anything that would interest you.
Perhaps a part time job could help you and not to mention the pocket money!
Getting started is the key. Pick up a newspaper and see any listings. Think of places in your town and go to them to see if they need help.
Don't overwhelm yourself with too many things to do. You could end up being stressed. Pick a few activities and do it.

Me too!!! The past month I ve been out of work, I eat, sleep, get on the computer, then sleep some more. I've seen my shrink, and use to see my counselor reguraly, but now I can't make myself get out of the house to see her. I am on anti depressants, but they seem to not be working. This really sucks. I know the only one who can fix it is me, but I struggle to get started. The best advice I have is to set low standards for yourself at first. 15 minutes of picking up the house, only 15 minutes. Do that several times a day, and before you know it, your house will be looking better. Pretty soon you are going over the 15 minute mark and you don't realize it. Go outside for 15 minutes several times a day, walk down the street and back and keep saying it's only 15 minutes then Ican go lay down, eventually you exceed the 15 mark a you want to do something else that gets you away from the house. Well, I am going to take my own advice and pick up my house for 15 minutes. Please get a Dr appt and talk to them about depression, and see if they can help. Good luck to you and God bless.

I have many days like that. I am a single mother who works full time. My son spends almost every weekend at his fathers. I don't go out to bars or anything like that. I am a homebody and like my quiet time. In fact, I get cranky if I don't have it. Sometimes I get upset with myself if I spend too much time doing nothing, but I definitely have to have that down time. I don't have any real hobbies either and that is my choice.

why dont you try getting a part time job? im an army wife and i was doing the same thing you were. i was sitting there every day watchin tv and playin on the computer and doin puzzles. i cried alot because i wanted my husband and all i did was dwell on all my problems. then i got this part time job. trust me it helps. if you dont want to go that route, why dont you try getting on a sleeping schedule and start to walk in the morning. even if its 3 laps around your house it will still get you goin. GOOD LUCK!

My best suggestion would be to plan your day. If you wait until today to decide what you are gonna do.....you could wasted half the day deciding. And by that time you decide why even bother. Planning the day before should help you get out of this funk. I often have the same problem.

ya know, the homework thing in highschool, i hope you got realllly good grade, but i'm sure as long as you do apply yourself, you'd be able to do anythin, but i used to be exacly like you, where i didn't want to do anything allll day, and i wouldn't go out with friends or anything, but there's somethin you can try. you can get into a job, or do something you enjoy, like take art classes, and meet friends and then hang out with friends.. also, if you like paint, try paintballing.. haha i just recently tried that, and it's awesome, but then again, i'm a guy, but that might just be me..
