Actually , it depends entirely on the context. If your sentence is something like “He wastes his time chasing shadows”: it is the infinitive “ Il perd son temps à poursuivre (or chasser) des ombres”. Or “Stop chasing shadows!”: “Arrête de chasser des ombres!”
If you have a progressive action then it would be the present participle: "Whilst chasing shadows, he lost his chance” “ En chassant / en poursuivant des ombres, il a manqué sa chance”.

"chasing" is a verb in participle present/gerund mode and can't be translated as infinitive 'poursuivre' or 'chasser'.
