In olden times....the star on the door meant MEN
the moon on the door meant Woman
There is no real explanation for why these symbols were chosen - they just were. and no explanation for why the men were left out of it in more modern outhouses..other than the fact that they were always in the " "house .

because outhouses were made so that you could go to the bathroom at night while you were camping out. or something like that.
