I have worked on ancestry.com but it cost wayyy too much for me to be on it for a year. I need a site that is just as good as that to give me Canadian genealogy information.

try familysearch.org or rootsweb.com. Also cyndislist.com has a lot of links to different things that are really helpful.
You can use heritagequest and ancestry at your local library for free.

Roots web and the Canadian Gen Web are your best bets.

Try the Mormon temple in Utah. I don't have the full information , but the will let you research for free, in hopes that you will bond through eternity. They have a very good research library on genealogy

You could have a monthly subscription with ancestry.com or ancestry.co.uk, I have the world ancestry subscription, it costs £25 a month and it's great. or you could try the Mormon site which has been mentioned already the address is www.familysearch.org it's brilliant, good luck, Diane.
