Probably arthritis, but you should get him checked out by a vet. Glucosamine supplements help a lot and there are pain medications for dogs that will help relieve arthritis pain. It's possible to manage it once you get them on a plan of supplements and/or pain relievers.

Don't know what kind of dog it is, if it's a small dog there is still time to get it some arthritis meds. If it's a large dog all they can do is give pain meds. I just lost my large dog Feb 11, he suffered from arthritis for 3 years before he died and the pain meds did help his quality of life.

Sounds like your doggy may have either arthritus or may be losing its muscle mass around the legs..I had a Lab who did the same thing. I would really recomend giving your dog glucosamine chrondrotin. The same ones humans take. I gave mine that for a very long time its all natural and helps immensely with the inflamation, repair and future health. Please do not give it any steroids..its an awful thing to do to a poor dog..you will regret it..try the glucosamine chrondroiton..it really helps! Good Luck to you and your doggy friend.Oh yes..they can have up to 500mg a day so dont worry about that. My Vet even recommended it.

Then why haven't you taken him to see the vet?
Dogs are the most loyal and trustworthy pets we have. He looks to you, his pack leader, for help and guidance.
Dogs do suffer from the same illnesses that humans do; including cancer and some dehibilitating diseases like spinal disorders. The decision if you want to pay for a costly operation or a series of drugs and other treatments is up to you. But, at least you can put him out of his misery or give him something to treat it. And please don't try drugs meant for humans you don't know the proper dosage or what effect they will have on your dog.
In the final analysis the responsibility for your dog's life is yours. You have to weigh that life, against you love for the dog, and against what you can afford. I will not condemn you decide the dog has to be put down, but his disease could be as simple as arthritis and treatable with a daily pill.

taking him to a vet is a good place to start. if there is a university near you that has a vet program, it is often cheaper. My guess is something with the hips. hip displacia(sp?) is not uncommon in dogs, especially at 12 years. if he'll let you, try giving a gentle message to the hind quarters. either side of lower spine and upper thighs with you thumbs in a small circular motion. this can help circulation if it is an arthritis problem. if he yelps or nips, it is uncomfortable and he should be taken to the vet. best wishes to your faithful friend!

Well if he does these things as you say, then he probably is very old, and in pain. Take him to the vet. Don't let the dog suffer. That is cruel and inhumane.

my doby did that too. he got really bad arthritis in his hips. pretty soon he couldn't even get up by himself, we had to go pick him up.
Bring him to the vet and see what they say, but we ended up having to put him to sleep. I didn't want to, but I couldn't keep him in pain b/c I was selfish.
Like I said, bring him to the vet and hope it's something simple, but keep in mind you might have to do the hard thing.

take him to the vet, it can be arthritis, joint swelling or bone cancer, if not a nervous disease that makes him lose control of legs, he's old, very old, and that's the reason why he might be suffering from bone problems... x ray will confirm...
