Since it is one of the Grand Slam events....I would not call it pretentious. with the course setup.....Its a challenging event even for the best players in the world.

maybe not, its one of the few courses in all of golf that doesnt cater to the players, one where most of the good players end up over par...not some dartboard course where everyone shoots 15 under...that and there are players from all over the world participating, not like the world series (which the 'world' really doesnt watch but has international participation) or the Super Bowl (which no one else in the world but americans watch or participate in)
