Do you bath him often, 'cuz if you bath him to much he loses the natural oil on his skin that helps keep his skin clean.

If he has mites, the shampoo isn't going to do anything and it can cause terrible itching!! Get a vet to check him to rule out parasites first. At 10 years old, allergies are probably not the problem.
If parasites are ruled out, consider a diet change (and check with your vet due to age of dog). Eliminate all commercial food for 6 weeks to 3 months and make your own food. I've included a link below. If there is no improvement, that eliminates allergies as well.
My sister's dog does not have an allergy but a skin condition similar to folliculitis in humans. She was scratching herself raw. It doesn't ever go away entirely, but we found that foods can make it worse and had to experiment. Sensible Choice Chicken and Lamb is the only dry food, so far, that doesn't make her skin condition bad that she will also eat with enjoyment. She also gets monthly baths, which also helps. She uses Fresh n Clean Medi-clean medicated shampoo for dogs by Lambert Kay. Not all pet stores carry it, so you might have to mail order.

He might have a food or a seasonal allergy. A vet can give medication to help the itching temporarily. Switching to a food that is less allergenic (a vet can make suggestions) might help. Supermarket foods often contain additives and ingredients that make dogs allergic - I learned my lesson the hard way on this one many years ago. Or, if he is like one of my other dogs, he may have a seasonal allergy to pollen (just like people) - it makes dogs itch. Medication can help with this until pollen season is over.
Flea shampoo is not very effective - so he may still have fleas. Try Frontline or Advantage instead - more expensive but it actually works unlike shampoos which only work for a very short time.

You should see a vet but in the mean time give him benadryl. I don't know what size your dog is but I give my 10lb dog half of a 25 mg tablet. Benedryl is very safe for dogs. My dog ended up having a tumor and since it was removed he has no more itching. It was a "mast-cell-tumor". But help your dog feel better now with some benedryl a couple times a day. Good-luck..poor guy...

Try giving him a little bit of fat off of some meat. I cook it first and leave the spices off. Skin off of chicken is PURE fat so it's really good for them. Once a week maybe twice a week won't hurt him. He may have diahrrea at first but after 2 weeks he'll be used to the high fat content.

have you checked for dry skin?? his skin will get drier as he gets older. If you have, then check with the vet, if you haven't, try oatmeal shampoo. you can buy it anywhere
