My husband is lending out his vehicle to a friend tomorrow so she can use it to get to a Dr's. Appointment. She used to have a license but never got one when she moved here from another state, so she knows how to drive. I am curious if she gets pulled over what would happen? We're in NY.

If she still has an out of state valid license nothing, all she will have to do is tell an officer she is visiting and borrowed the car....if she has no license she may get your car impounded and receive a driving without a valid license citation.

Lots of people live in NYC and stop driving, then don't bother with a driver's license.

Now if her old state's license is not expired, she can probably talk her way out of that, or at least just get a petty citation. If that driver's license is expired, then the cops may treat it like driving without being licensed to do so. Your friend would be wise to research the law on that.

Keep in mind your insurance might have funny feelings about you knowingly loaning your car to someone not licensed to drive. Particularly, if she is in an accident, they might refuse to cover the accident, which could REALLY suck for her if it's an at-fault injury accident. Don't know if they could sue you too, but they might try.

that just doesn't sound like the best plan in the event the worst happens..... not sure on all of the legal aspects, but should she have an accident, it will negatively impact your insurance. Maybe he could drive her there and back if his schedule allows?? It puts you both in a tough spot to do this and then possibly back out without being "bad friends" I'm assuming you're either in Upstate or Western NY where mass transit isn't as much an option as it is in the City. Good luck either way.
