Well, you could always do they old typical party. You know, pinata, treats, three legged race and all that stuff. Another would be, like, you know taht place called either Bamboola or the Jungle? Or even Chuck E. Cheese... Ask him what are the three places he likes, and go from there.

i am a mom of 6 boys. I know you said no clowns but The best birthdays we had at this age were a clown party where the boys DRESSED as clowns. We put makeup on there faces, gave them wigs and bandannas and big sneakers and clown noses. We attempted to teach them to juggle (popcorn, m&m's or koosh balls work well) we also played a game where we balanced plastic bowls on their heads and tried to catch the koosh balls in their "hats". Also check out Family Fun magazine for great ideas. We did their cowboy party a few times and had a blast! A simple treasure hunt, hide a series of clues each leading to the next is always a big hit at any themed party. NO sleepovers at this age! Keep the party short and sweet. (2 hours is PLENTY!)

Buy a slip and slide, bbq, and get a pinata let the kids run wild! They can decorate their own cupcakes instead of cake. You could have a face painter come to the house.
You could take them all to the movies.
The zoo.
I think at home parties are the best no rushing. And usually alot cheaper.
Have fun! I have two boys who will be 5 & 7 in June. I am buying them a big trampoline as their gift & I will be having our party at home this year.

I recently went to a birthday for a 6 year old boy. It was indoors at a local community rental place. They played Pin the Tail on the Donkey, Musical Chairs, and Duck Duck Goose. Most of the kids just liked running around in the big open area.

If the weather is nice you could have the party at a park and have a cookout. They would be able to run and play. If the weather was bad you could have the party at your house and play pin the tail on the donkey and musical chairs.

You should have a sleepover
Boys his age enjoy that most
rent a movie, pop-corn, candies, & juices
remember to keep the sound down so neighbors don't complain. Also, tell them lights off at 9 or 10, and then the boys
will chat, talk, and do sneaky stuff, but eventually they will fall asleep.

you can do a cowboy theme and rent a petting zoo or animals or even ponies they can ride. I would also try maybe bowling or even a party at a local water park or mini gold course.

See if there are bounce houses, ball pits or slides for rent in your area. They typically rent for about $50 for the day and they come with electrical pumps to blow them up. My daughter's 5th birthday is in May and I might do the bounce house for her.

I've learned the best boy's birthdays are when you just let them play. Feed them hot dogs, chips, and a juice drink. Let them play more. Let your child open his gifts, followed by cake and ice cream. Let them play until it's over. They enjoy it sooo much more than structured parties.
