Not at all! People do tend to follow the relationship patterns set by their parents, *however* nothing is set in stone. Ever. The important thing to do is to look at that individuals parents and to help them see the pattern present there, try to learn what caused the relationship not to work out, and - most importantly - learn from it! This can be difficult, because it requires looking at one's parents as *people* and not simply "Mom and Dad." It's hard to look at people as influential as parents objectively, but it helps so much in situations like this.

Once all is said and done, the next this person should take (or take concurrently) is to learn about what makes a positive relationship. In my opinion, self-esteem and communication skills are the two most important things out there. You can't love anyone until you love yourself and you can't work out issues like an adult unless you can discuss them rationally. Good luck!

No! My parents were divorced when I was 17, both went through 2 more bad marriages and several bad relationships. I have been married to my hubby for almost 20 yrs. and my brother has been married for 15.Just remember we are not our parents, their mistakes are their mistakes! Not ours.

Not true at all! You and your spouse are the only two people that determine if your relationship is going to work out.

My Mom and Dad were divorced. I've been married going on 27 years. My gf parents were divorced; she and her hubby are going on 37 years of marriage. So I think all you have to do is find the right person.
