What you're trying to say is that they are purring, and they are either happy to see you or they are just content with their surroundings.
If your cat is not fixed though, it could a calling for an alley cat... if you do not want your cat to do this (or have kittens) fix your cat immediately!
Or they could be wanting a bird, or mouse outside and they have no possible way to get it.. although my cat doesn't hum, she makes a "kah, kah, kah" noise (she's weird!)

Well my first thought would be that your cat is purring, in which case it is a sign of being happy and content.

My second thought is that it could be a growl. When your cat is doing this, is he/she around something that my be frightening to them? Are their ears down? Are they hesitant or backing away from someone or something?

If it is while your petting them though or while they are brushing up against you and they don't seem to be stiff or upset but cuddly and loving... they are just purring and thats their way of saying "I am very happy right now".

Sounds like to me you are describing purring. Most of the time a cat purrs it is due to happiness and sense of security...but occasionally a cat will purr when he is feeling playful.

When cats fight other cats they make that sounds to show the others they are stronger or better. But sometimes the sounds tells them to back off

Does it sounds like a laugh? A bit like a machine gun? And the cat is making a kind of "eh-eh-eh-eh" sound? If so, it's laughing!! Not many cats do it. Usually you will see them doing it when they're staring out a window watching birds.

If it's like a brrr brrr brrr brrr or prrrr prrrs prrrr kind of sound then it's purring. Cats do it when they're content usually but will also do it if they're sick as the sound is soothing to them.

You are describing a cat's purr. They do this if they are happy or content. But sometimes, just like us when we are nervous we laugh, they will purr for this reason

My cat does that too.It is because when they see a bird or some other animal they make that noise because they think they can eat it.
