Some cats just love to eat and the owner will keep filling up the dishes. You need to give the cat about 1/2 cup of dry food twice a day. If you also give them wet food, no more then 1/2 can twice a day.

They get fat because they usually don't go outside to play or hunt. If you're cat is getting fat, just give it smaller and smaller portions of food over time. Also, let your cat go outside for a bit every single day. Indoor cats will hate the outside, but hey, the outside is their NATURAL habitat. After a week they'll be okay venturing out into the great outdoors.

Well, yes, a big part is just overfeeding. But just like with humans, lack of exercise also helps kitties get overweight. If you give a cat a "proper" amount of food but she doesn't run around or play, she'll gain weight. A proper diet and regular exercise/playtime will keep just about any kitty slim & trim.

because they always have food available for the cat, and so whenever the cats around the food-- might as well eat it!! they eventually become super lazy, and don't do anything but sleep and eat
