It's an oval shape, about half an inch long and brownish in color. It doesn't extrude much but is somewhat hard skinned and is only minorly painful when I press on it. Any ideas what this may be?

Honestly, it could be a number of things, so it instead of me speculating and guessing here, I would say you're much better off going to a gynecologist/doctor, and have them take a pep smear or a small sample of your skin and send it off to the laboratory for results. This way you will know what this is for sure and will be prescribed treatment that may treat this outbreak or at least give you the information you need to know how to prevent future outbreaks and shorten the duration of each.

Ingrown hair would be my guess, though I'm a little at a loss about the brownish color.

go see a male as opposed to a gynecologist doctor it could be a harmless ingrown hair or more serious like syphilis . without being a mans doctor or seeing what your talking about I can not say It could be hundreds of things so best to show your doc and get that answer
