Really depends on the cat. Some refuse to use certain types.

My cat uses Tidy Cat and/or Fresh Step.

I've also used that Arm & Hammer kind.

I use Feline Fresh. It's a sawdust type consistancy, clumpable, and is a by product of the lumber industry. It also comes in pellet form. It lasts a really long time too. For two cats, I only buy a small bag every two months or so.

I have used clay and crystal type litters in the past, but once I found this, I'll never change back. The dust from clay litters can be hazardous to cat health and the crystals - though they work really well - can be sharp for cats to walk on.

I use wood pellets that are use in wood burning stove. It is all natural and leaves a nice wood smell when the cat buries it mess. A 35-40 lb bag goes for about 6 to 7 dollars. It takes about 2 days before you need to change it, you can use it in the garden like munch after they are done with it. Don't use crystal if you have a male cat, it can get into his urethra and can end up costing you cat either painful surgery or even death. It causes the urine to not flow.

I use the silicone bead type. It's unscented so it doesn't smell perfumy and it absorbs all the cat pee odors so the box doesn't stink. You need to scoop but you don't need to change nearly as often and I have no litter box smell at all. It is more expensive but is worth it. You can find it in pet stores but I haven't seen it in grocery stores. The brand I use is Litter Select, but there are different kinds. Get the type that is rectangular shape, the round shape type rolls all over the place and makes a mess.

I like to use something that's environmentally friendly such as recycled paper or corn or wheat based but the best litter is the one that your cat and yourself like! Clay contains silicon so cats get respiratory problems and silicosis, whether you use clumping or not, the problem is the same. The crystals are dangerous for kittens and they manufacturing isn't good for the environment.

Pony pellets are cheap and good but they need to be cleaned as they will go mouldy and ferment.

Corn, wheat and pony pellets will bring mice.

In my opinion I LOVE Tiddy Cats Small Spaces with some Tiddy Cat Litter Box Deoderizer. It doesn't smell at all and it works wonderfs for our two cats. I like the small spaces because even in a large space it keeps the smell down majorly.

We started using Fresh Step and vered away to try several cheaper ones. We haven't like anything except Fresh Step so we are back to using it full time. Our kitty is worth any amount of money! :-)

Scoop Away. It clumps easily and it leaves a fresh scent.
