They're starting to do this. A colleague at work was telling me that her 12 year old wanted a stretch limo etc to go to the end of year dance.

it's the programmes that they show on Digital TV that the kids are getting these ideas from, the kids really don't know the value of things.

Only certain schools organise them for those who are 15/16 (just taken GCSEs) and 17/18 (a-levels).

Personally I can NOT see the point - I think I have spoken to 2 or 3 people who were at school with me 6 times since I left 17 years ago.

When I was young we organised our own end of year events. Usually at a pub or night club; these were great fun; no staff invited.
When my older kids left school (1993/4) there was usually an end of year disco or dance, normal party clothes.
When my son left his school organised a prom at a local hotel and I had to hire him evening dress. It looked like a James Bond convention.

Unfortunatley yes more and more schools are picking up the American Habit of having Proms and losing more traditional English virtues of End of year activities.

They didn't when I was at school, but the prom thing has started creeping into the upper schools. I blame it on the the trashy American TV that the kids watch on cable & satalite channels.
