Yes it does or rather because I am a female, I guess it died when I got married. It used to bother me when I was a teenager because it used to bother my grandfather and we were very close. For awhile there I thought when I got married I wouldn't take my husbands name but it just stopped mattering somewhere along the line. As long as my childern know about my family and the history etc I think it doesn't really matter about the name. Besides I ended up with a guy who has a terrific last name, one I am proud to have too!

Hmm... well, for the majority of persons who have not become hard core researchers, you may be only acquainted with your immediate family. Assuming your dad is an only child, or the only one with children, that could be true.
On the other hand, just as opinion.. I think it is very likely that you could have TONS of male relatives that you don't know. Example.. your gr gr grandfather could have had a number of children, who have descendents. But you are only aware of your direct group.
Just playing devils' advocate, to open up some thought. Being female, my family name changes with marriage anyway. I am far more interested in family lineage and relatives, none of which are name dependent. So, no, it doesn't mean much to me. Families live on, irregardless of the label attached.

I'm female, so my name automatically stops with me, but I only have one brother and my father didn't have any brothers... so if my brother doesn't have sons, our strain of the name stops here. It does bother me, but my mom did something interesting. Her maiden name was Hall, and because she changed her name but didn't want it to die then and there, she gave it to my brother as a middle name. So the poor guy has a lot of pressure to procreate lots of boys!
