You are right on with your observation about the disciples and even us living here and learning and accepting the truth.
It is normal for people to be caught up in the circumstances that surround them. That causes them to have a blind eye to the truth as well. And this includes the beliefs they adhere to. Only those who step back away from their cumstances with faith and belief that God will help them through their circumstances can learn to walk by faith. These are the people that walk the way of truth. They are walking with Jesus Christ. For so many things he did required faith. And God is always pleased with those who walk by faith and not by sight. These are the people that can handle the truth even if it means sometimes it seems almost to hard to handle.

"The truth." I wonder whether there is only one.
Are the Gospels "the truth?"
Mark 14:12 15:25 states that Jesus was crucified the day after the Passover meal was eaten.
That's the gospel, right? That's the truth, right?
John 19:14, says it was the day before.
That's the gospel, right? That's the truth, right?

I agree with you, but I think alot of the disciples and even the apostles back then, didn't get the true message. They got some of it, but I don't think they "got" it. People still aren't getting it. I'm talking about the peace and love thing. Not what Jesus can do for us, but what he tried to teach us.

According to some, it's not just their eyes that were "opened"... They enjoyed it so much that they changed their life styles drastically and decided to always hang out together.

I know... I was pretty amazed when I realized that there was no God. It was like a big weight lifted off my shoulders.
