One thing we should have learned in the last fifty years about Cosmology is that just because you don't see something there, doesn't mean its not. "Space is nothing". Perhaps, but perhaps not. Space, a completely empty stretch of Outer Space, without stars, planets, galaxies or even one of the Next Rest Area 20mpc signs might just be "something". Just as time has no physical substance, yet undeniably exists, so is space insubstantial, yet measurable. You could say that the test is "can you measure a distance?" If you run the Big Bang clock backwards, something does seem to happen. Less space, less time, then everything gets fuzzy. What was the Universe like in those first few milliseconds? Someday we may have smart enough computers to find out, though I expect that by that time, the computers will quickly realize that humans neither could understand the Answer, nor deserve to know. It's all confusing. Cosmology is like that.
