Braces are not pleasant, but the effects of having them once you are finished is great. Do whatever the orthodontist says (rubber bands, tightening etc) and you will be out of them fast!
At first they hurt and then you get used to them and they stop hurting. I ate mashed potatoes with melter cheese and sour cream (I was young and didn't need to diet :) ) and jello! Then I could eat anything. I have no idea what they cost. I would do with traditional, plain color, or get the CLEAR!
When you get your braces off, once your teeth are straight, your teeth feel HUGE 'cause you aren't used to feeling them.

Meh don't be scared.
It doesn't hurt actually putting the braces on. No no. They just glue on the brackets and then insert a wire through them. No pain. Just it takkes a REAAAAALY long time which sucked for me as i am impatient.
This is what they do:http://www.braceface.com/gettingbraces.htm
Supposedly you aren't aloud to eat gum popcorn and hard stuff like apples. and no sugar. but i am a sugar addict and that didn't stop me. just make sure u brush well!
As for when u just get your braces off, well lets just say you won't really be able to eat anything other than soup. Yes soup will become your best friend.
Why? Cuz your teeth are going to start to shift and this will hurt like hell (this is your freinds were talking about. the actual process of putting braces on doesn't hurt. The aftermath does. becuase your teeth start moving for the first time in so many years...)
They cost around $6000 canadian. But it costed 3000 for me cuz insurance paid half of cost for me. And you pay this monthly so don't worry.
Now the colour combo... I would recomend silver. NOT WHITE!! (it makes your teeth look yellow and the white stains too, just overall hell) and not green or black (that just looks bad)
Any colour looks good other than those. Don't do anything drastic though. So no mix and match colours. you gettting braces is enough of a change. having two/three clours will just be too much attention . So yeah i suggest silver.
But i do recomend getting braces. totally worth it. you will be greatful in the future. AND if u are still a kid and live with parents, well get them now so your parents pay for them not you ;]

Braces can be painful, but not so painful that an asprin can't handle it. They only really hurt for about a day or so whenevr you get them adjusted. Your mouth will be sore, but it is bareable.
I got my braces put on by having my mouth held open by a plastic thing and they put a bit of special ceminet on your teeth, stick the square metal "brace" on your tooth and dry it with a blue light thing. Once all the brackets are on your teeth they will place a wire into the holders, connecting them. You place the colored elastics over the wire on their own holders.
I never really had a problem with food. Some got stuck in the braces, but it all comes out. The only thing I really couldn't handle was bubble-tape gum. It really got messy, I advise agaisnt that. You'll find out what you can and cannot have.
Dunno how much they cost.
You can pick whatever color you like. I mostly chose the gray bands because it was less noticible.
Good luck!

Get flashy metal-they're the strongest which can lead to shorter treatment time. Gold is cool. Become a fanatic about oral hygiene. An expert flosser. 15-30 minutes a day. It's all about plaque control, baby. Ask for some rubber bumpers to attach to the braces in lieu of wax. The first night I had my braces my mouth was very sore. I couldn't sleep however I was determined to ride it out. I read the novel, "Jaws," in one sitting. Rinsing your mouth with warm, mild salt water is very soothing. Orthodontics are one of the best reasons to be alive during our time of modern medicine.

Braces will hurt for the first few days probably about a week. Try to eat yogurt,pudding,soups....etc. When braces are being put on it doesn't really hurt so dont be worried!
