No, Yahoo Messenger does not work on linux, or at least in any usable way. There was an official linux port many years ago, but they've discontinued it because Yahoo is like almost every other commercial software company and just doesn't care about Linux. The best linux IM client is probably Gaim, which supports yahoo IM and chat, but not voice or webcams. Gyachi has full webcam support, but it also has the most completely horrible-designed and ugly user interface of any computer program ever publicly released... (in my opinion)

For PDF files, ubuntu comes with a program called Evince (actually the menu system will always refer to it as just "Document Viewer" but in case you need to run it from the command line or something, it's really called evince) which works with most pdf and postscript files. It can't play videos or javascript or stuff like that, so if you need to open a complicated pdf (or you have a statistics professor who uses really screwed up math fonts) you can get the official Adobe reader, which is kept fairly up to date, but it's bigger and slower than evince.

Ununtu uses a program called Pidgin for yahoo and a program called ASM for msn messenger. You install these through the package management program called synaptic. You may be using a Ubuntu version that has a control panel. You should be able to install software from there.
